SUMMARY OF ORDINANCE NO. 2021-05 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF NEVADA CITY AMENDING CHAPTER 17.68 AND 17.80 OF THE NEVADA CITY MUNICIPAL CODE RELATING TO RESTRICTIONS ON COMMERCIAL SIGNAGE AND ALLOWING LIMITED EXCEPTIONS TO SIZE, PLACEMENT, AND STYLE The approved Ordinance No. 2021-05 amends the Nevada City Municipal Code Chapter 17.68.080 and 17.80.180 related to restrictions on commercial signage, allowing for limited exceptions as to size, placement, and style. Amended language to Chapter 17.68.080 identified in bold is as follows: E. No single sign shall exceed twenty-four square feet in area. The planning commission may grant an exception for signage placed on a building that is located within the Historic District and that has served as the same continuously running business since the turn of the twentieth century, which may be a size as approved by the planning commission. F. The aggregate area of all signs of any one business entity shall not exceed twenty- four square feet; provided, however, that a single business entity having public customer entrances on two or more sides of a building may treat each such side as a separate entity. The planning commission may grant an exception to the number and location of signage on a business that is located within the Historic District and that has served as the same continuously running business since the turn of the twentieth century. Amended language to Chapter 17.80.180 identified in bold is as follows: No exterior surface of any building or structure in any zone shall be painted in any color or with graphic design whereby such color or super-graphic shall constitute a message, code, or signal. Legal signs are excepted here from. The planning commission may grant an exception from this wording for signage placed on a building that is located within the Historic District and that has served as the same continuously running business since the turn of the twentieth century. The Ordinance was passed and adopted by a 5-0 unanimous vote of the City Council, on May 26, 2021, and will be effective 30 days after its adoption.
